One of the biggest moments in the EUROS so far is the Jan Oblak penalty save against Cristiano Ronaldo in the Round of 16 match between Portugal and Slovenia. Many expected Ronaldo to score from the spot since he is known to score there often, but when the penalty was saved, the crowd in the stadium and the fans at home were shocked. It got to Ronaldo since he has been trying to score in the EUROS this summer but has struggled to get one. CR7 wanted to core to become the oldest player to score at a European Championship. Oblak becomes the second goalkeeper to ever save a penalty against Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, which is a very rare list to be in. The other goalkeeper who saved a penalty against Ronaldo and Messi is former Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves. The Brazilian keeper has reportedly saved 10% of Ronaldo's missed penalties of his entire career, as he saved three of CR7's penalties in La Liga. Alves saved a penalty against Ronaldo in his debut season in La Liga with Almeria. The other two penalty saves were made by Valencia against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2015 and 2017.

Alves was one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga this past decade, and he also stopped Lionel Messi when the Argentine played for FC Barcelona. Messi's penalty was saved against Alves in the 2012 Copa Del Rey semifinal. The Brazilian keeper was an expert and made saves from penalties, especially against two of the greatest footballers of all time. The Brazilian keeper and Oblak are similar since the Slovenian keeper also saved a penalty against Messi, making both keepers a threat against the greats of football.

Oblak made a save against Messi in a penalty kick in 2015 as FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid faced off in the Copa Del Rey quarterfinals. The difference between Ronaldo and Messi is that this time, the Argentine was lucky that the save went back to him. The Argentine pushed the ball into the net with Oblak already on the ground to score against Atletico Madrid. It is safe to say that both Oblak and Diego Alves are experts at knowing how to save penalties against Ronaldo and Messi. Oblak will use these saves as motivation to continue to be a shot-stopper during penalty kicks against other opposition, while Diego Alves is yet to retire from football.

What is next for Cristiano Ronaldo?

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal are not done in EURO 2024, as they advanced to the quarterfinals and will go up against France this Friday at the Volksparkstadion. The last time Portugal and France faced off was in EURO 2020 in the group stage. Ronaldo scored a brace in the match, while Karim Benzema scored a brace for France, and the game ended 2-2.

The winner of that match will play against Spain or Germany in the semifinal. On the other side of the bracket, the Netherlands will take on Turkiye while England will face off against Switzerland. Portugal will face either of those four teams if they reach the final.
