Vinicius Jr. and the Brazilian national team did not manage to beat Colombia in their last match of the group stage of Copa America, which ended 1-1. Brazil looked determined to win the match to top the group, but their star players couldn't get it done. The match brought controversy, as Brazil believed that they should've been awarded a penalty in the first half. Vinicius Jr. dribbled in the box until he went down. Daniel Munoz from Colombia tackled Vinicius in the box, but the Brazilians asked for a penalty. After a VAR check, the penalty was not given. After the match, CONMEBOL admitted that they made a mistake in not calling that play a foul in a box and a penalty for Brazil. The referee took a while to listen to the VAR officials in deciding to award the penalty, but instead, a corner was given. Vinicius Jr. and the rest of the players were in shock as the replay showed a slight contact on the Brazilian player by the Colombian defender.

CONMEBOL's report of the incident after the game said, "In the 42nd minute, in a dispute for the ball inside the box, a defender does not touch the ball, and, as a result of the dispute, reckless contact is produced for the action. The referee is unable to observe the action and allows the game to continue. The VAR, in its protocol check, analyzes different angles, speeds, and considerations and is unable to identify that the defender does not touch the ball before recklessly coming into contact with the attacker. The VAR incorrectly confirms the original field decision."

Vinicius Jr. did not receive a yellow card for complaining, but he did get a yellow card in the 7th minute for a tough challenge on a Colombian player. For that yellow card, he will miss the match against Uruguay in the quarterfinals of Copa America.

Colombia's controversial disallowed goal

The penalty incident with Vinicius wasn't the only controversial play in the match. Colombia scored in the 19th minute thanks to a Davinson Sanchez header, but it was offside due to Jhon Cordoba's position. People were confused, as Sanchez was the one who was slightly onside and scored the goal, not Cordoba. Some assume this is because he got near the ball during the play.
