A violent incident involving a stone thrown at a Peruvian police officer overshadowed Universitario de Lima’s “Noche Crema” event on Friday. The exhibition match, which saw the current Peruvian bicampeón face off against Panama's national team at the Monumental stadium, was marred by the aggression. The suspect, a minor, allegedly threw a stone at the police officer who was escorting Universitario fans through several districts of Lima en route to the stadium. The stone struck the officer, resulting in a serious injury.

Police Condemn the Attack and Call for Accountability

The incident took place in the district of Surco and was condemned by the Peruvian National Police (PNP), who released a statement on the matter. The PNP confirmed that the stone hit Sub-officer John Smith Tucunango Tapia on the head, and the officer was immediately transported to Casimiro Ulloa Hospital for initial treatment before being transferred to the PNP’s Central Hospital for further evaluation.

Fortunately, after a thorough examination, no fractures were found, and the officer is under observation as he continues to receive medical care. The PNP strongly denounced the violent act, particularly violence directed at law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to protect citizens.

An Act of Intolerance Amid Celebration

The incident not only endangered the officer’s safety but also highlighted a broader issue of intolerance that disrupts the peace that should prevail during public events. Universitario’s “Noche Crema” event, typically a celebration of the club's new season, became a backdrop for this troubling act of aggression.

The event, which serves as an introduction to the team that will compete in the Liga 1 and Copa Libertadores this year, also featured a tribute to Panamanian striker Luis Tejada, who passed away a year ago. Tejada, who had a stint with Universitario in 2017, was honored before the match began.
