Real Madrid remain determined to strengthen their backline ahead of the 2025-26 season. Despite Carlo Ancelotti managing to keep the defence competitive, the lack of depth at centre-back has become a growing concern—especially in light of Eder Militao’s long-term injury and the uncertainty surrounding David Alaba’s future at the club.

With Nacho Fernandez having already left, and Alaba no longer guaranteed to stay beyond the summer, Madrid know they need to act. The priority is clear: to bring in a reliable, top-level central defender who can slot straight into the first team and offer long-term security.

In that search, one name stands out above the rest—William Saliba. The French defender has become a pillar of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal project, combining strength, intelligence, and remarkable maturity for a player of just 24 years. His performances in the Premier League have earned him widespread recognition, and Real Madrid have taken notice.

According to Fichajes.net, the Spanish giants are already studying his contractual situation, aware that he’s tied to Arsenal until 2027 and carries a valuation of around €80 million. It would be a major investment, but one the club is seriously considering given the player’s age, profile, and readiness to perform at the highest level.

Saliba fits the mould of Madrid’s recent transfer strategy: young, experienced in elite competition, and with plenty of upside. Similar to moves for Camavinga, Tchouameni and Bellingham, the idea is to secure top talent before the rest of Europe pushes the price even higher.

From a tactical perspective, Saliba would offer Ancelotti—or his successor—a defender capable of thriving in various systems. Whether in a back four or a three-man defence, his calm presence, ball-playing ability and one-on-one strength would bring a new level of control to the backline.

Although no formal negotiations have begun, the interest is serious. Much will depend on Arsenal’s stance and whether Saliba would be open to a move to La Liga. But if Madrid choose to make their move, they’ll be doing so for a player they believe could be key to their next era.

A long-term fix for a crucial position

William Saliba is more than just a talented defender—he’s already proven himself at the highest level and continues to grow. For a Madrid side looking to reinforce its defensive core, Saliba represents both immediate impact and future leadership. If the opportunity arises, the club won’t hesitate: this is a player who could anchor the backline for years to come.
