Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez didn’t travel with the Inter Miami team for the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Without the two stars from South America, Inter Miami defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in Canada at BC Place. Many fans in Canada were disappointed to hear the news that the star duo was not playing or traveling to the match. Instead, what Messi and Suarez did was to host the start of the International Youth Cup tournament in the stadium of Inter Miami. The two Inter Miami players also went to watch their sons play: Thiago Messi and Benjamin Suarez, who play in the Inter Miami academy. Messi and Suarez were not injured and took the time to rest for next week and to watch their sons playing in the youth tournament.
Messi left a message to all the young kids who were participating in the youth tournament, including his son. Messi said, “Hey, how great to see this stadium like this for an event like this. It is an honor for us to have you here at home. We hope you enjoy this event and this experience. I know the sacrifice your parents make every day to take you to training, matches, and tournaments like this, but well, we parents try to do everything to make you happy, and football is happiness, among many other things.”
The Argentine star made sure to let the kids know that they should enjoy the game regardless of the result. Messi said, “I hope you enjoy this experience and this tournament with friends and family. Aside from the result of the match, I will let you start the match because everyone wants the tournament to start. All the best and success. Thank you.”
It was all just a break for Messi and Suarez since they didn’t travel with the rest of the team to Vancouver, Canada, as they did some training as well at the Inter Miami facilities. Messi, Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and another player who didn’t travel with the squad in Canada were involved in the training session in preparation for next week’s two games at home at Chase Stadium.
Meanwhile, in Canada, Inter Miami seemed to take control of the match as they were leading 2-0 after 54 minutes. Robert Taylor scored the opener of the match in the 38th minute, and then he assisted Leonardo Campana in scoring his goal in the 54th minute. Vancouver got one back in the 72nd minute as Ryan Gauld scored from the penalty spot.
Although Messi didn’t play with Inter Miami in the last game in Canada, the Argentine star is set to play the next two games this week before he heads with the Argentina national team ahead of the Copa America. Inter Miami will host Atlanta United on Wednesday and then will host St. Louis City on Saturday. Messi will then train with the Argentina national team as the Copa America approaches.
