“The FIFA Players' Status Committee today approved the following change of association. Rogelio Gabriel Funes Mori can represent Mexico with immediate effect, ”a FIFA spokesperson told ESPN Digital. The permission comes at the right time because the Mexican Soccer Federation must deliver the pre-list of those summoned for the Gold Cup this week and could not include Funes Mori until it has the approval of FIFA.

The change of nationality and selection has already been rumored for months, but the process is not that simple. In the first place, Funes Mori had to naturalize as a Mexican, resign from the Argentine Soccer Association and then send the call to the Mexican Soccer Federation.

As soon as the Argentine received his “certificate of Mexican nationality”, the FMF sent the request for the change of Association and now the approval of the FIFA Player Status Committee has been confirmed. In recent days, the debate has been open about whether naturalized is the best option for selection, he has been compared with Santiago Ormeño, Chicharito Hernández and there has even been talk about whether a “foreigner” should represent Mexico.

The 30-year-old attacker hopes to receive Gerardo Tata Martino's invitation to the Gold Cup. With the problems within the national team, the withdrawal of Raúl Jiménez due to his skull fracture and his new status, everything seems to indicate that Funes Mori has overcome the obstacles more difficult.
