For many years people have tried to predict the results of different events way before they begin. Of course, we believe that its impossible to predict the future, nevertheless we acknowledge data and facts can help us foresee which team might lift up the most important trophy in football.

That squad is nonother than the one led by Fernando Santos and Cristiano Ronaldo: Portugal. Why can we say this? Because the Portuguese striker was the top scorer at the last Euro. This may not seem important, but once you connect the dots, you'll also consider Portugal a favorite for the World Cup.

The last champions have been European, but that is not the only thing they share. Before Spain, Germany, and France went on to lift the World Cup, they played the Euro two years prior to the most important football tournament.

And you may ask, what happened at those Euros? Well, the three of them had the top scorer of the tournament. Meaning that the nation of the top scorer might go on to the next World Cup and win it! Will this new tradition endure in Qatar?

The top scorers stats

At the 2008 Euro, David Villa was the tournament's top scorer with four goals, and in 2010 Spain won their first World Cup. The next Euro played in 2012 had the German player Mario Gomez as one of the top scorers (with three goals to his name). And in 2014 we all know what happened in that dramatic final against Argentina. Finally, in 2016 Antoine Griezmann scored six goals in that Euro, and France lifted the World Cup in Russia two years later.
