Thomas Tuchel has become the leading candidate to take over as manager of Manchester United, as the club faces growing uncertainty about Erik ten Hag’s future. Although the Dutchman’s departure has not yet been confirmed, his time at Old Trafford seems to be nearing an end following a disappointing start to the season, both domestically and in the UEFA Europa League.

Manchester United's Search for a New Leader

Reports suggest that Manchester United’s leadership, led by Jim Ratcliffe, has already begun exploring alternatives, with Tuchel at the top of the list. Other names reportedly being considered include Barcelona’s Xavi Hernández and Brentford’s Thomas Frank. Despite Ten Hag signing a contract extension until 2026 after winning the FA Cup last summer, confidence in the manager has significantly waned due to a five-game winless streak, leading the club to look for a drastic change to regain their competitive edge.

Tuchel, who is currently without a team after a difficult stint with Bayern Munich, appears to be the preferred choice for Ratcliffe. It’s not the first time the British magnate has approached the German coach. Earlier this year, Tuchel turned down the opportunity to manage the "Red Devils," having recently left Bayern. However, the circumstances may now be different, and a potential move to Manchester United no longer seems far-fetched.

Tuchel's Premier League Return in Sight

If Tuchel takes charge at Old Trafford, it would mark his second managerial experience in the Premier League. He made a strong impact during his first tenure, taking over Chelsea in 2021 and swiftly guiding them to Champions League glory, defeating Manchester City in the final with a goal by Kai Havertz. Additionally, Tuchel ensured Chelsea’s qualification for the following season’s Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League. Manchester United now sees him as the solution to their current struggles and a potential catalyst for a return to the top level of competition.
