This weekend there was absolute chaos in Barcelona after the 5-3 defeat against Villarreal in Montjuic. Things had been tense for weeks because of the team's poor performances and disappointing results in the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey. That had left Los Blaugranas with only two tournaments for this season: the Champions League and La Liga.

But the latter became an almost impossible objective after Saturday's defeat, as they fell 10 points behind Real Madrid and 11 points behind Girona, the leaders in the standings. With this scenario, Xavi Hernandez made a drastic decision: at the press conference he announced that he will step down as Barcelona's coach at the end of the 2023/24 season.

This not only sparked rumors about possible replacements for the Spanish manager, but also about his relationship with the club's chiefs. Xavi had supported Joan Laporta's main competitor in the 2021 elections, Victor Font, and that was evidently not forgotten. So, although the president hired him later that year to replace Ronald Koeman, he never fully trusted him.

In fact, according to AS, in recent months the coach had been left without some of the chiefs who supported him, such as Jordi Cruyff and Mateu Alemany. And the arrival of Deco as the new sporting director did not improve things. That's why some of the players who recently arrived at the club did not have Xavi's backing, such as Raphinha and Joao Felix, while the coach's wishes were unfulfilled. But incredibly, now that he has announced that he will leave, the chiefs are willing to pay attention to him.

What will they do?

Since last summer Xavi Hernandez has been urging the chiefs to sign a holding midfielder to fill the place left by Sergio Busquets. He wanted Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, but Joan Laporta ruled him out. However, according to Sport newspaper, in the remaining days of the January transfer window Barcelona will look for a player with those characteristics, paying almost $3 million to hire him.
