Lionel Messi’s future was unknown after his contract with PSG expired. There were rumors that he was either returning to FC Barcelona or moving to Saudi Arabia with a luxurious contract. Instead, he decided to play for Inter Miami in the MLS in the United States, which shocked many football fans. With FC Barcelona’s financial issues making it hard to sign Messi, it was between Inter Miami and Al Hilal for Messi last summer, and the Argentine star picked America. The president of Al Hilal, Anmar Al Haili, spoke about offering Messi a huge salary but still being rejected by the Argentine star. Al Haili said, “We actually contacted Messi when his contract in Paris ended. We presented him with an offer of 1.4 billion euros, but the player refused because his family wanted America. It was a surprise how the player could refuse such a huge offer for the sake of his family. It was possible to convince his family, but he did not hesitate to refuse. We respect this, as family is more important than money.”
Fabrizio Romano reported in 2023 that Al Hilal offered Messi a two-year contract that was near the $1 billion package deal. Messi would’ve been the best-paid footballer in the world, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is currently the best-paid player in the world due to his contract at Al Nassr. Ronaldo reportedly earned around $213 million a year with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Beckham spoke a little about convincing Messi to join Inter Miami instead of Saudi Arabia. The co-owner of Inter Miami said, “A lot of players were wanting to go and going to Saudi Arabia at the time [summer of 2023]. He had a lot of offers obviously on the table. But he is very clever. He knows hat massive market the US is. The opportunities that you can have. I think he also saw the life that me, the kids and my wife have in LA.”
Lionel Messi reportedly has a base salary of $10.4 million at Inter Miami and earns an annualized compensation of $20.4 million. He earns the most in the MLS out of any player and also has revenue-sharing agreements with Adidas, Apple, and other companies. Apple TV streams all MLS matches, and Adidas is the shirt sponsor of all the teams in the league.
