While Cristiano Ronaldo is with the Portuguese national team, Al Nassr is preparing to build a strong team for the Portuguese striker next season to compete against Al Hilal. Al Hilal won the domestic trophies in Saudi Arabia, and the team wants to bring in world-class players next season to win a trophy for CR7. One of the players linked to a move to Al Nassr is Liverpool center-back Virgil Van Dijk. MARCA reports that Al Nassr wants to sign Virgil van Dijk and aims to make him the highest-paid defender in the world. Al Nassr’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, met on Tuesday night with the representative of Van Dijk, putting on the table a contract that would make the Dutchman the highest-paid defender in the world. Van Dijk’s contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2025, and the club has yet to offer him a new contract. The defender is valued at around $30 million, but Al Nassr would need to offer more than that to convince Liverpool to sell this summer.
According to Ian Doyle from Liverpool ECHO, Liverpool has had no contact from Saudi Arabia’s side, Al Nassr, regarding a bid for Van Dijk. Liverpool intends to extend his contract along with Trent Alexander Arnold and Mohamed Salah, whose contracts are also up at the end of next season.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool in 2018 for more than $85 million from Southampton. The defender played 48 matches for Liverpool this past season across all competitions. He scored four goals and provided two assists this past season across all competitions, including the Premier League, the Europa League, the EFL Cup, and the FA Cup. He won the EFL Carabao Cup with Liverpool after scoring the goal in the 1-0 win against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.
Van Dijk and the Netherlands will be playing in Group D and will play against Austria, France, and Poland. Their first match of the tournament will be on Sunday against Poland at the Volksparkstadion. Their second group stage match is against France on June 21st, and their third game is against Austria on June 25th.
