Undoubtedly, Kylian Mbappe has been the main man for defending Champion, France as reigning Ballon d'or winner, Karim Benzema misses the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar due to injury. Mbappe has scored three goals and provided an assist for France in the competition and is in the race for the world cup golden boot award.

However, Manager Didier Deschamps named Mbappe among substitutes as the Les Blues squared up against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia. The tactician had earlier stated that Mbappe was fit for the match and he showed signs that he wanted to start inorder to boost the chances of clinching the individual award.

As Les Blues finish their World Cup group stage campaign at Education City Stadium on Wednesday, Olivier Giroud, Hugo Lloris and Antoine Griezmann were also given rests for the Tunisia match in addition to standout player Kylian Mbappe. Raphael Varane was one of the only two players to keep his spot in Deschamps' starting lineup following the victory over Denmark.

The move to place Mbappe on the bench backfired as France was stunned by Tunisia who took the  advantage to record one of the upsets in the history of the world cup. A solitary strike from Wahbi Khazri was all Tunisia needed to punish Deschamps for his action. However, France were later confirmed as group winner.

Deschamp stunned

This is not the first time an African country will be defeating France at the world cup as the Teranga Lions of Senegal surprised the world with a lone goal victory over France at the 2022 edition held in South Korea and Japan. Deschamps was stunned by Tunisa display and lessons must be learnt if Les Blues are to retain the trophy.
