After a breakout season in 2020 with Santos Laguna, when Los Laguneros decided to part ways with their back-then goalkeeper, Jonathan Orozco, to give Carlos Acevedo the confidence of becoming the starting goalie, he’s not disappointed with his amazing stops and reflexes.

But not even his outstanding performances have earned him a place in Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s roster for the upcoming Mexico National Team games, as the Argentinian coach thinks that there are at least 4 better goalkeepers in Liga MX: Guillermo Ochoa, Rodolfo Cota, Jonathan Orozco and Alfredo Talavera.
His absence from El Tri roster can only mean one thing: Carlos Acevedo needs to prove himself in a bigger club or a more competitive league before Martino can consider calling him to be part of Mexico National Team, something that might happen at the end of the season, given that he’s still on time to be part of the final squad that will be part of FIFA World Cup if he changes clubs during the summer.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper was linked to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen during the offseason, and although the German team denied that there were negotiations for the Mexican goalkeeper, his future points towards a European club. If he stays in Liga MX, Club América might be his next team, given the good relationship there is between both clubs.
