Ochoa has been the starting goalkeeper of El Tri since 2014.

Mexico National Team is getting ready to face what will be the toughest game since Gerardo “Tata” Martino took over the team in 2019, as the match against USMNT will define the future of both squads towards Qatar 2022.

Ricardo Ferretti could help Carlos Acevedo to replace Guillermo Ochoa in Mexico National Team

It’s yet to be seen the starting XI that Martino will place against the Stars and Stripes, but one thing is for sure: the starting goalkeeper will be Guillermo Ochoa, as he’s had the same role since 2014, when he won the race to be the first-string goalkeeper for Brazil 2014.

And even if it has been proven time after time that there’s better goalkeepers in Mexico than Ochoa, he remains as the starter given the support that he gets from Televisa, one of the biggest sponsors of El Tri. But by keeping him on the roster, they’re closing the doors to better players, like Carlos Avecedo.

Acevedo finally got his call-up thanks to an injury that Jonathan Orozco suffered in the last game Xolos de Tijuana played prior the FIFA match window, and even if he doesn’t seem to be getting any playing time, his luck might be about to change.

He could make the jump to Europe

During some of the training sessions El Tri has had in preparation for the game against USMNT, PSV scouts were following Chivas winger Alexis Vega, who is said to be a player they want to add for next season, but while checking him, they also were impressed by Acevedo.

Now, the 25-year-old goalkeeper can finally have the boost his career needs to be considered by Gerardo Martino as the candidate to replace Guillermo Ochoa in El Tri’s goal, as it’s more than obvious that he has better conditions than the Club América goalie.

Will he be in Qatar?

It’s still early to know if Carlos Acevedo will be part of the squad that Gerardo Martino takes to the World Cup, as he has considered 4 other goalkeepers to be ahead of him, but if his arrival in PSV becomes a reality, he’d be considered at least as the second goalkeeper for Qatar.
