FC Barcelona likes to have legends remain at the club to help their youth players and help the club grow. The Catalan club has been willing to have Xavi Hernandez as their manager for the past few years, and they are looking for options within the club to replace him.
One name that was close to the job was Rafael Marquez, who was the coach of Barca Athletic. The club saw him as an ideal replacement for Xavi this summer but Barcelona decided to appoint Hansi Flick. Now since the club has a manager for next season, Marquez leaves and gets a new job.
It has been officially announced that Rafael Marquez will be the assistant coach of Javier Aguirre, who is now appointed as the new coach of the Mexican national team. The FMF said in a statement that Marquez will be a part of the coaching staff of Aguirre, who coached Mexico in two World Cups, in the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. Marquez will gain more experience in coaching by being an assistant coach.
The Mexican national team is making changes in their coaching staff because of the poor performances in the Copa America this summer. Mexico was grouped in Group B with Venezuela, Ecuador and Jamaica. Mexico placed 3rd with four points, but Venezuela and Ecuador advanced to the quarterfinals.
Their former coach, Jaime Lozano, received lots of criticism for the team’s performances, and the fans were very upset. The group stage of the Copa America was not eventful for Mexican fans, as the team only managed to score one goal. They won 1-0 against Jamaica, lost 1-0 against Venezuela, and drew 0-0 against Ecuador.
Rafa has great skill in leadership in team management, according to members of FC Barcelona with the youth players. His undisputed leadership in team, and Javier has a strong track record in coaching teams in Europe as he led Mallorca to the Copa del Rey final this past season, where they lost against Athletic Bilbao. The duo will be coaches of Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.
After the Copa America 2024 this summer, Mexico will have two friendly matches later this year to continue preparing for the World Cup, which is in two years. Mexico will be playing against New Zealand on September 7th at the Rose Bowl. On September 10th, Mexico will play against Canada at the AT&T Stadium.
