When Gerardo “Tata” Martino announced the 29-player list that will be part of Mexico National Team roster for the last World Cup Qualifiers match window, the absence of Carlos Acevedo stood out, as “Tata” called four goalkeepers and Acevedo wasn’t part of the list.
But after Jonathan Orozco stepped down from the roster following the injury that he suffered in the last game that Xolos de Tijuana played before the FIFA break, the opportunity to be part of an official match of El Tri for the Santos Laguna finally arrived.
Acevedo knows that this is his only chance to prove the Argentine coach that he has the level needed to be part of the Aztec squad, something that everyone seems to know except for Martino, who has been reluctant to include him given his young age.
Several soccer analysts have tagged him as the replacement of Guillermo Ochoa, who is 36 and is playing his last world cup cycle, but if reports are true, Acevedo can sneak up in the final roster of El Tri and maybe even steal the starting role from Ochoa and all thanks to Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti.
According to reports from ESPN, Alfredo Talavera won’t renew his contract with Pumas UNAM, becoming a free agent when the current season is over and his new destination is likely to be Ferretti’s team, FC Juárez.
In the past, Talavera has stated that he wouldn’t mind missing the world cup and giving his place to another goalkeeper if he feels that he’s not in perfect shape prior the international tournament, something that is likely to happen as Bravos have been struggling to find regularity.
With the absence of Jonathan Orozco, Acevedo has positioned himself on the mix to be the third goalkeeper of El Tri for Qatar 2022, but if Talavera ends up arriving in FC Juárez, his decision could be thing that leans the scale for Acevedo’s case.
And if he manages to succeed on his task of having a good performance during this week’s training sessions and maybe playing some minutes in the game against El Salvador if El Tri earns their ticket to Qatar 2022 in the first two games, Acevedo could secure his presence in future call-ups.
