Mexico National Team will face the last CONCACAF Qualifiers match window with the idea of securing their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, something they will most likely do as the games against Honduras and El Salvador won’t be as hard as the one against USMNT.
Rogelio Funes Mori won’t be part of Mexico National Team for the next FIFA match window
El Tri will receive the Bars and Stripes in Estadio Azteca on March 24, and that game will define the standings of the confederation, as both are currently tied in points, with 21 each. But aside from the result of the game, El Tri needs to win the game to end the losing streak the have against USMNT.
The thing that has to worry Gerardo “Tata” Martino the most is the lack of goals El Tri has showed in recent games, especially after the 3-2 defeat against USMNT in the final of CONCACAF Nations League, as they haven’t been able to score against the Bars and Stripes since then.
The last time that El Tri beat USMNT was on a friendly match played in 2019, when the Aztec squad beat 3-0 the team coached by Gregg Berhalter. Coincidentally, that was the last game that Javier “Chicharito” Hernández played with Mexico National Team, and he scored one of the goals that game.
It’s true that Martino needs a striker that has a scoring streak going, like the one that “Chicharito” currently has, and even if he doesn’t like the Mexican striker, he might not have another option, as Henry Martín hasn’t impressed him, and Rogelio Funes Mori might miss the FIFA match window.
According to reports, Funes Mori is dealing with an injury suffered on during the match against Club América last weekend, and he’ll miss at least 10 days, but the doctors will have to wait to see how the injury develops to determine its magnitude.
Given that Funes Mori and Martín have been the favorite strikers of Martino aside from Raúl Jiménez, it seems logical that he calls Hernández, as there’s few other options under Martino’s radar, because he refuses to call young players.
Reports suggest that Marcelo Flores is part of a preliminary list of 50 players that might be part of the roster that will face the upcoming FIFA match window, although it’s unlikely that the 18-year-old offensive midfielder will be part of the final roster.
Other strikers that can be called by Martino are Santiago Giménez, from Cruz Azul, as the 20-year-old has become an essential player for La Máquina in recent games, scoring a brace and assisting one time. José Juan Macías could also be part of the roster, as he seems to be regaining his shape after the 6-month loan he had with Getafe FC, where he played less than 300 minutes in total.
