Officially, Santiago Gimenez will not be in the 2022 World Cup. The Feyenoord striker was completely discarded from the Mexican team for Qatar 2022 and all because of a controversial decision by coach Gerardo Martino, who preferred two players who have hardly played but are of his total confidence.

In that sense, the players who will attend Qatar 2022 are precisely Rogelio Funes Mori and Raul Jimenez, two elements that have Martino's approval, but who have not played much in recent months due to their respective injuries. Faced with this situation, Santi Gimenez took definitive action regarding the selection.

As a consolation prize, the Mexican federation would have offered Santiago Gimenez to attend the World Cup as a spectator and exclusive access to many areas with the team. However, the player was not too keen on the idea and decided to bring forward his mid-season vacation in anticipation of joining Feyenoord in a few days.

Could Santi Gimenez go to Qatar as an emergency?

The reality is that the only scenario where Gimenez could attend the World Cup is precisely as an injury replacement, in the case of Raul Jimenez or Rogelio Funes Mori. However, journalist Kery News reported that for the moment, Jimenez seems to be recovered for at least the second match of the tournament.
