Gerardo “Tata” Martino knows that the upcoming CONCACAF Qualifiers match window will be the most difficult he’s had to coach since he arrived in Mexico National Team, as it will define if El Tri directly access to Qatar 2022 or will only manage to secure a playoff berth.

At least on paper, two of the three games seem manageable, as Honduras is already eliminated given that they haven’t won a single game of the 11 matches that have been played so far, tying just three games, losing 7 straight games.

El Salvador still has the option of qualifying to the playoffs, as they are 8 points away from Panama, who currently stands 4 in CONCACAF, but if the Panamanians earn at least one point, that will leave out of the race the Salvadorian squad.

The game that worries “Tata” Martino the most is the first of the three, as the Aztec squad will receive USMNT in Estadio Azteca, given that the Bars and Stripes have won the last three encounters both national teams have had.

If that wasn’t enough, a defeat against the Americans will jeopardize their ticket to the 2022 World Cup. But even knowing all that, Gerardo Martino is still considering leaving Johan Vásquez out of the roster that will play those three games.

Why won’t Martino call Johan Vásquez?

According to reports by TV Azteca, the Argentine coach won’t call Johan Vásquez given that he’s playing like a left-back in Genoa CFC, his current team, and according to Martino, El Tri doesn’t need another left-back, as the position is covered, but instead they need a center back.

Vásquez’s natural position is as a center back but given his young age and versatility he can also play on the left side of the pitch, something that should improve his attractiveness for any coach, except for Martino, who is ready to leave him out after calling him the past FIFA match window just to have him benched.

That could be the real reason behind his refusal to have in El Tri the best defender that Mexico National team currently has, according to MedioTiempo, as Johan Vásquez left El Tri camp in February rightfully disappointed for the lack of activity, something that didn’t sit well with Martino.
