When rumors about his return to Mexico National Team after almost four years of absence were stronger, Carlos Vela confirmed that he won’t be wearing El Tri colors again as he already decided to step down to give other players the chance of arriving in El Tri.
Gerardo Martino is responsible for Vela’s retirement from El Tri
But where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, as reports suggest that Carlos Vela and Gerardo “Tata” Martino engaged in conversations regarding a potential return to El Tri for the upcoming FIFA match window and Qatar 2022.
Vela was interested in playing another World Cup, as he knows he still has two or three years left playing at a high-leveled pace and even considered arriving in Liga MX for Apertura 2022 given that his contract with Los Angeles FC will end over the summer, but Martino asked him something that closed any possibility of seeing him again wearing El Tri’s colors.
According to reports, “Tata” Martino asked Vela to publicly apologize for his prolonged absence from Mexico National Team, especially on the moments El Tri needed him the most, something that Vela didn’t like because it wasn’t up to him to be called or not.
Vela knows this player should be El Tri’s next number 10
