Alarm bells are ringing in Nuevo León as the Tigres vs Santos match is at risk of being postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 at the Felinos club.
So far, seven cases of infection have been recorded at the club, and of these, players Carlos Salcedo, Jesús Angulo, and Carlos González are known to have the virus.
However, Mexican media reported that today more infected players were added to the count.
Although the names of the other infected players have not been disclosed, it is known that according to the 2021-22 Liga Mx Season protocol, if there are 10 infected players in a club, the next game of that team must be rescheduled.
This casts doubt on the possibility of Tigres' debut in the current Liga MX championship against Santos Laguna, a match scheduled to take place next Saturday, January 8 at Corona Stadium.
According to the reinforcement of Liga MX's sanitary protocol, and because the directors have tried to fight against contagions energetically, this case would merit the reassignment of the match schedule.
But this would not involve a change of date for the match against the Laguna team, since the regulations state that:
"If a club has between 7 and 10 positives, registered in the category, its match may be rescheduled within the same day. If it has more than ten, it may play it on another date".
Therefore, everything seems to indicate that if the contagions remain at seven as they are now in Tigres, the match would take place later in the day.
That is to say, the game would take place later that day, and instead of the game starting at 20:00 hours as planned, it could be played hours later.
However, there is the other side of the coin: if contagions increase, the game could easily be rescheduled, which could mean an alteration in the match date, as is currently happening in the Premier League.
The Felinos have taken the issue of contagions at the club very seriously and have decided to close their doors to the media to avoid further contagions.
The weekly conferences will be via zoom, although it was not specified what will happen with the entrance to the coverage of home games.
COVID-19 infections increased again due to the past Christmas holidays, when several players, personnel, and even directors decided to travel and visit their families.
As of December 30, there were more than 93 positive cases of COVID-19, after more than 3,757 tests were performed on Mexican soccer teams.
The review covered Liga MX, Liga MX Women's, Liga MX Expansion League, and Basic Forces clubs.
The infections were distributed as follows:
- Liga MX, 26 positives out of 463 tests.
- Women's Liga MX, 21 positives out of 498 tests.
- Liga Expansion MX, 23 positives out of 440 tests.
- Basic Forces (Under 20, Under 18, Under 17F, Under 16, and Under 14), 23 positives out of 2,356 tests.
