Fernando “Tano” Ortíz arrived at Club América’s dugout after Week 8, once Las Águilas decided to part ways with Santiago Solari, who left the team at the bottom on the table given that they only earned six points as a result of one victory and three draws.

But it only took 12 games for Ortíz to help Las Águilas return to the top places of Liga MX, as they closed the season standing four, avoiding playing Repechaje, and making it into the semifinals of Clausura 2022, where unfortunately they were eliminated by CF Pachuca.
But given the outstanding performances that Las Águilas had with Ortíz as their coach, Emilio Azcárraga and Santiago Baños decided to name him the coach for Apertura 2022. And now, Ortíz is already working in the planification of the next season, as he already has in mind the first player that he wants to sign.
According to reports from sports journalist Jonatan Peña, the Argentine coach has requested the renovation of Guillermo Ochoa, who became an essential player on his stint as interim coach of América in Clausura 2022.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper has just a bit over six months of contract left with Las Águilas and so far, there hasn’t been reports of a negotiation for his renewal, although now with the pressure of Ortíz, Santiago Baños will have to start conversations with the Mexico international to prolong his stay.
