The death of Diego Maradona has courted controversy just like his life did. Diego Armando Maradona is regarded by some as the Greatest Player of all time to play football, rating him higher than the legendary Pele and the modern-day duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. During his career, Diego Maradona played for Barcelona and Napoli amongst others in a career that was chequered with drug abuse, domestic drama and concerns about being overweight. Just like his life, Diego Maradona's death in 2020 has caused so much controversy, especially for the doctors who were treating him. 

The controversy of Diego Maradona's death with Physician, Leopoldo Luque

Diego Maradona's physician, Leopoldo Luque is being accused of negligence in treating Diego Maradona and the doctors have been charged to court on the count of Involuntary manslaughter. Luque is charged alongside Maradona's psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov. There is also an incriminating voice recording between both doctors where Diego Maradona is being referred to as "Fatty."

The children of Diego Maradona; Dalma Maradona, Dieguito Fernando and Giannini Maradona are the ones who are filing the lawsuit against Dr Leopoldo Luque. The case has also generated a lot of following in Argentina with many newsmen always at the scene of the trials. 

How is the court case between Maradona's children and Dr Leopoldo Luque going?

The last time the court sat on the case was in late June 2021. The case is usually held at the Prosecutor's Office, San Isidro, Buenos Aires. So far,  Dr Luque has maintained that he isn't guilty or culpable for the death of Diego Maradona. In the doctor's words, he said: I’m proud of what I did. I did my best. I offered Diego everything I could: some things he accepted, others not."

Dr Leopoldo Luque's lawyer, Julio Rivas, has come out to say that the Neurosurgeon doctor was not in charge of Maradona's home care and thus, he can not be held responsible for the former footballer's death. Diego Maradona died on November 25, 2020, after having a heart attack while recovering from brain surgery.
