The Copa America USA 2024 is fast approaching, and the South American players are starting to meet with their national teams in preparation for the tournament. One of those players is Liverpool striker Darwin Nuñez, who has recently joined the camp of the Uruguay national team. During the international tournament, some Liverpool fans were worried about his future after a tough few weeks of the season. His form dipped during the last weeks of the season for Liverpool, and the fans have become frustrated with his poor form in front of the goal. The criticisms seem to have gotten to him because, after the 4-2 win against the Spurs at Anfield, the Uruguayan striker posted all Liverpool-related posts on his Instagram. A rumor circulated that the player would be sold this summer as he was unhappy and could potentially look for another club after the Copa America.

Nuñez joined Liverpool in the summer of 2022 from Benfica and since has struggled to find consistent good form in the Premier League. This season, the Uruguayan striker played a total of 54 games across all competitions, where he scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists. The Reds signed him for around $92.2 million, which had added lots of pressure on him to deliver on the pitch consistently. Now, with Arne Slot arriving this summer, it is uncertain if Nuñez will be a player the Dutch manager would like to keep.

Nuñez was also rumored to have fallen out with Jurgen Klopp in the last stages of the season, as he wasn’t starting games anymore and looked unfazed about his departure. The striker did not show that tension when talking about Klopp announcing his departure from the club. Nuñez said, “We were all a little shocked by Klopp’s departure, no one expected it. It’s a shame that he’s leaving. Personally, I would like him to go big, winning things, and it didn’t happen that way. For the players it’s also a shame. I wish [him] the best in the world.”

Nuñez’s Copa America with Uruguay

Uruguay is one of the favorites to lift the Copa America trophy this summer, and Nuñez has arrived at the camp in preparation for the tournament. Uruguay is in Group C, where they will face USA, Panama, and Bolivia. Uruguay will play two friendly matches before the tournament starts, against Costa Rica and Mexico.
