Mbappé only played one EURO for the French national team during his career. In the 2021 EUROS, France was eliminated from the competition by Switzerland in the Round of 16. The game ended 3-3 after extra time, and a penalty shootout decided the winner. Mbappé needed to score the final penalty of the shootout to go to sudden death penalties, but his penalty was saved by Yan Sommer; France was eliminated from the tournament.

Mbappé said something similar about the different levels of different continents, such as South America. Before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Mbappé suggested that the level of South America was not equal to the level of Europe due to the competition each had. The Mbappé comment on South American football caused lots of controversy as South American players disagreed with the French player’s words. Emiliano Martinez was one of the players who disagreed and said, “Europeans always play on perfect, wet courts, and they don’t know what South America is. Let them go to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador... Let’s see how easy it is for them.”
