The Mexican national soccer team will return to action in the CONCACAF Octagonal this Thursday against Jamaica after defeats against the United States and Canada, which left Gerardo Martino's team on the verge of the playoff zone. However, on matchday 9 they could drop into the reclassification position if a loss or draw against the Reggae Boyz is combined with a Panama win over Costa Rica.

Gerardo Martino's El Tri will face Jamaica in third place in the Octagonal standings with 14 points, the same as Panama in fourth place, in the playoff zone, while Canada is the leader with 16 points, followed by the United States with 15 points.

Goal difference keeps Mexico out of playoff berth

Mexico's goal difference of +4 is what separates them from Panama, which is +2 in fourth place. However, El Tri depends on itself to avoid falling into the reclassification zone, as a win against Jamaica would ensure Mexico remain, at least, in third place, but could even move up to second or first place if Canada and the United States do not win their respective matches.

Mexico and Panama will play their matches in the ninth round of the CONCACAF octagonal on away games. Should El Tri lose or draw against Jamaica, it runs the risk of being in the playoff zone, which it would be if Panama wins all three points in its match against Costa Rica at the National Stadium in San José.

Jamaica winless at home

Jamaica will be playing its fourth home game in the Octagonal with Paul Hall as a coach for the first time in the qualifiers. However, they have not been able to win at home, where they started with a 0-3 defeat against Panama, while in their last two matches they drew against Canada (0-0) and the United States (1-1).

Mexico will face its sixth match on foreign ground, with two wins, against Costa Rica (0-1) and El Salvador (0-2), a 1-1 draw against Panama, in addition to defeats against the United States (2-0) and Canada (2-1).

On the other hand, Panama has had four away games, beating Jamaica (0-3) and Honduras (2-3), as well as losing to El Salvador (1-0) and Canada (4-1).
