Senegal won the AFCON 2022 in which the extra ingredient for this cocktail of emotions was that two Liverpool teammates faced each other and only one could win: in the end Sadio Mané defeated Mohamed Salah.
In the midst of a hard-fought match, the duel for the title went to penalties to determine the best team on the African continent.
And on this occasion, Sadio Mané showed that he can come back despite the pressure as he was fouled in the box and took the penalty.
However, context played a dirty trick on the star of the team and he missed the chance to open the account in Senegal vs Egypt.
However, when the AFCON 2022 final had to go to penalties after a hard-fought 0-0 draw, the player did not miss again and gave his national team the victory.
The two Liverpool heavyweights, Salah and Mané, faced each other, each defending the colors of his country, so it was a tense match that, as already noted, was full of fouls, but without any expulsion.
And despite the fact that both gave their all for their respective national teams, they were unable to break the 0-0 scoreline at the end of regular time, so both teams had to go to penalty kicks.
Beyond the drama of what it means to play for the trophy in a Nations Cup, the real and intense drama was in the duel between these teammates.
In fact, the duel between teammates became even more intense when Mané took the penalty at the start of the match, as a melee broke out near the spot of the foul that led to the penalty, and Salah went to where his goalkeeper was standing.
And he did so to indicate which way Mané would shoot, a tip that was a well-taken advantage of by Mohamed Abou Gaba, a. k. a. Gabaski, who at the moment of the shot, threw himself over his right post, just as Salah had indicated to him.
However, this advice did not pay off when the two teams went to the penalty shootout.
The duel could not be defined in regular time, not even with the foul committed by Mohamed Abdel Monem on Mané, who could not beat goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal, who was the hero for his team, at least in regular time.
The match was very physical and therefore 53 fouls were called, although there were only 6 yellow cards, 4 for Senegal and 4 for Egypt.
In the end, despite the hard-fought match, Senegal and Egypt did not have enough time in regulation time or extra time for one team to beat the other.
It had to come down to a penalty shootout in which, fortunately for Sadio Mané, this time he did not miss the target and became the hero of his country by scoring his last penalty to give Senegal the AFCON 2022 title.
When will Salah be back from AFCON?
