FIFA President Gianni Infantino has ignited a firestorm of controversy after announcing that Inter Miami, Lionel Messi's new club, will be a special guest at the 2025 Club World Cup.

The decision to invite Inter Miami has been met with widespread criticism, with many fans and pundits accusing FIFA of favoritism towards Messi. The Argentine superstar's arrival in MLS has already generated immense excitement, and his inclusion in the Club World Cup is seen by some as an attempt to capitalize on his star power.

Infantino justified the decision by stating that Inter Miami had earned their place in the tournament by winning the MLS Supporters' Shield. However, the fact that the club will be hosting the tournament at their home stadium, the Hard Rock Stadium, has only fueled speculation that the invitation was influenced by other factors.

"Based on an outstanding performance this season, you (Inter Miami) deserve and are qualified to be part of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup," Infantino said. "You will have the honor of opening the tournament, hosting the first game here in Miami."

FIFA's official statement echoed these sentiments, highlighting Inter Miami's "excellent and consistent campaign" as the reason for their inclusion. However, many have pointed out that the club has not yet won a major trophy and that other MLS teams, such as the Columbus Crew (the reigning MLS Cup champions), may have had a stronger claim to the spot.

Social media has been flooded with negative reactions to the news, with fans expressing their frustration at what they perceive as a blatant disregard for sporting merit. Critics have accused FIFA of "destroying football" and of giving Messi preferential treatment.

With Inter Miami's inclusion, only one spot remains in the 32-team tournament. This final place will be filled by the winner of the Copa Libertadores, which will be decided in a final between two South American giants.
