While Arne Slot is set to become the new Liverpool manager for next season, the club is unsure about Darwin Nuñez's future. The Uruguayan striker is having a poor end to the season, and questions have been asked if he should be sold this summer. This is Nunez's second season with Liverpool since joining the Reds from Benfica in the summer of 2022. Since the club may doubt Nuñez's future, Slot would have to find a way to include him in the team next season if the club decides to sign new strikers. Jurgen Klopp was the one who wanted Nuñez in the first place, and now, with him leaving the club, it is uncertain whether Slot would want to play him as the number 9 next season.
Paul Joyce from the Times reports that Liverpool had the chance to go for Christopher Nkunku before he joined Chelsea, but Klopp insisted that Nuñez was the option the team needed. Liverpool's new CEO of football, Michael Edwards, and their new sporting director, Richard Hughes, may look at his contributions to decide if he has a spot in the team next season.
Nuñez has played 50 matches in all competitions for Liverpool this season. He scored 18 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, and 11 of them were in the Premier League. His last goal for Liverpool was against Sheffield United earlier this month in a 3-1 win at Anfield. Since then, the Uruguayan striker has been in a bad goal drought and has started to sit on the bench. Due to Diogo Jota's latest injury, Nuñez started against Everton this week, but Liverpool lost 2-0 at Goodison Park.
After Feyenoord's 3-1 win against Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie last night, Slot talked about the links to Liverpool and said, "I believe that Feyenoord will let me join Liverpool as it would be a massive step for me. There are negotiations ongoing between clubs, I’m here waiting… I’m happy at Feyenoord, but Liverpool would be a fantastic opportunity for me”. According to reports in the Netherlands, there is already a verbal agreement between Liverpool and Feyenoord over the appointment of Slot to the Reds in the Premier League.
