Liverpool fans were heartbroken when they heard the news that Xabi Alonso would stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season. Liverpool were hoping to appoint Alonso next season after Jurgen Klopp announced leaving the club at the end of the season. Alonso seemed like the perfect fit since the Spanish manager has played for them in the past and has a strong connection with the club. The Spanish manager was also linked to Bayern Munich but after multiple weeks of rumors about his next destination, Alonso publicly confirmed he will join neither club. Liverpool now needs to target another manager since Alonso was their main choice, and the club is already set to look at their potential new manager.

Alonso confirmed his decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season and did not want to comment on Liverpool or Bayern Munich during his press conference today. Alonso said, "I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, and I informed them that I will STAY and continue at the club. After lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place to be for me. My job at Bayer is not over."

In reference to Liverpool, he said, "I’m not gonna comment about Liverpool or Bayern. These are big clubs, and I’ve strong links with them, but I’m in the place where I want to be." Ian Doyle, the chief writer for Liverpool Echo, reports that Ruben Amorim is now the favored target for the Liverpool job. Liverpool knows they cannot afford to waste time should they decide Amorim is their man. Fabrizio Romano reported that Amorim's current contract with Sporting has a release clause worth $32 million, which will expire in 2026.
