Today, football sadly loses another legend of the game, Andreas Brehme. Brehme was a German left-back who played in notable European clubs and was important in the 1990 World Cup win for the German national team. Today, he sadly passes away at the age of 63 in Munich, Germany.
Brehme was famous for scoring the winning goal in the 1990 FIFA World Cup final against Argentina, where the Germans beat the Argentinians 1-0. This was a rematch of the previous World Cup in 1986, where Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in Mexico, where Diego Maradona lifted the World Cup trophy at the Azteca Stadium. After Germany was runners-up in the 1986 World Cup, the Germans were hungry to reach another World Cup final and win it. And they did just that.
In the 1990 World Cup, the tournament was held in Italy. Brehme was the main left back for the German national team, where he loved to push up further up the pitch. At left back, he scored three goals in the tournament's knockout stage. Brehme scored against the Netherlands in round 16 and scored in the semifinals against England. He wouldn't disappoint his nation in the final against Argentina because he converted a penalty in the 85th minute to give Germany their third World Cup in its history at the time. After having a tendency to score important goals in decisive moments, the penalty he scored against Argentina was the most important of his career as he won his nation another World Cup.
