Lionel Messi is doubling down on his American adventure. According to trusted journalist David Ornstein, the Argentine star is set to extend his contract with Inter Miami until the end of 2026. This news not only shakes up football in the United States, but also confirms that Messi’s connection with the Florida-based club goes far beyond commercial interests.

Messi’s current deal with Inter Miami runs through December 2025, but the club’s leadership — with David Beckham playing a key role — has already moved to secure the continued presence of the World Cup winner, who has transformed the club's fortunes since arriving in mid-2023.

The Argentine didn’t just boost interest in football across the US; he also led the team to their first official title in the 2023 Leagues Cup, raised the performance levels of his team-mates, and attracted global stars like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez. Together, they have built a strong and experienced core.

Renewing until the end of 2026 would mean Messi continues playing in the MLS until the age of 39. Given his current physical condition and his influence on and off the pitch, it’s hardly surprising. That year also coincides with the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted in the US, Canada and Mexico. Although Messi has admitted he’s not planning that far ahead, speculation around his involvement in one last tournament refuses to fade.

Ornstein reports that negotiations are well advanced, with both sides keen to finalise the deal in the coming months. While financial terms are yet to be disclosed, it’s expected Messi will retain the unique benefits of his current agreement — including revenue shares from Apple TV, commercial deals with Adidas and image rights bonuses.

This extension would further establish Inter Miami as the beating heart of Latino football in North America. With packed stadiums, surging ticket sales and unprecedented media attention for an MLS side, the “Messi effect” has been nothing short of revolutionary for the league.

For Messi, this may well be the perfect transition into the final chapter of his professional career. With less pressure, a competitive side built around him, and a lifestyle that suits both him and his family, the No.10 seems to have found an ideal setting for his football farewell.

THE LAST DANCE IN PINK AND BLACK

If the extension through 2026 is confirmed, all signs point to Lionel Messi playing his final professional matches in an Inter Miami shirt. A golden ending for a legend who, even in the twilight of his career, continues to make history.
