Despite being neck-deep in debt and having let go of their highest-earner in Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona still has one of the highest wage bills in world football. In the past 4 years, the club had signed big-name players such as Antoine Griezmann, Phillipe Coutinho and Miralem Pjanic and placed them on very high salaries. Now in debt to the tune of €1.3bn, the Catalan club is trying to move on some of the highest-earners but are not making much progress.

To curb their spending and further mismanagement, the league board La Liga, placed a salary cap on the club, halving how much they can pay their players. However, players such as Griezmann (£574,000 weekly), Phillipe Coutinho (£406,000 weekly), and the duo of Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic (£271,000 weekly each) all still remain at the club. This brings Barcelona's total annual wage bill to £238, 513, 600.

On the other hand, the MLS highest-spending club, David Beckham's Inter Miami also spends a lot on players at the standard of the MLS. Inter Miami has Gonzalo Higuain as their best-paid player, shelling out an annual salary of $5.79m to the Argentine striker. Higuain is the third-highest-paid player in the MLS behind Carlos Vela and Javier Chicharito Hernandez.

Despite being the highest-spending club in the MLS in terms of salaries, Inter Miami pays a modest $17.80m annually to all its players. This is more than 13 times the amount of money Barcelona pays to its players. The MLS has a strict regulation on how much clubs can pay to players and this has kept most of the clubs financially responsible without spending a fortune on players salaries.
