Mexico National Team couldn’t beat USMNT in the first game of the last CONCACAF Qualifiers match window, as they weren’t able to get near Zack Steffen’s goal. Luckily for them, the Stars and Stripes couldn’t finish the plays they had to open the score sheet and had to settle with a scoreless draw.

But the lack of opportunities the Aztec squad showed on Thursday night in Estadio Azteca and the absence of a striker that could create danger in the box are not things new in Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s Tri, as they’ve manifested for at least a year.
Although this was the first game in which Gerardo Martino placed the best players on his starting XI, as he decided to sit Jesús Gallardo and Héctor Moreno to give Johan Vásquez and Gerardo Arteaga the chance of prove why they’re immovables on their respective clubs.
Still, it wasn’t enough for El Tri to secure a victory, and it seems that the decision of opening the doors for younger players arrived too late, especially since it was asked a long time a go to start a generational change that Martino refused to have until now.
The way Mexico National Team plays hasn’t been very applauded, especially since past June, when the irregularities started after the defeat in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League, given the lack of good results.
That’s why Yon de Luisa knows that the continuity of Gerardo Martino in El Tri’s dugout is still on the air, as he already said, when he couldn’t confirm that “Tata” will be Mexico’s coach in Qatar 2022, although the decision of parting ways could be in detriment of the team.
If they wanted to rescind his contract prior the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Mexican Football Federation would have to pay the Argentine coach close to $2 million, as stated on the release clause on his contract, adding the remainder of his salary.
When he first arrived in El Tri, the relationship between the Argentine coach and Mexico National Team was meant to be for only 4 years, but after the good results he gathered in the first two years of his cycle, FMF considered extending his stay at least until 2026. It’s yet to be seen if that ends up happening, as the irregularity showed recently has jeopardized his project on the long-term run.
