Mexico National Team hasn’t ensured their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup just yet, as they let scape the three points on Thursday night against USMNT. The scoreless draw meant little help to El Tri, as they still need at least three more points.
Carlos Vela is willing to return to Mexico National Team if this coach replaces Gerardo Martino
But the lack of aim that the Aztec squad showed against the Stars and Stripes is nothing new, as they haven’t been able to score regularly since the defeat against the Americans in the final of the CONCACAF Nations Cup.
The absence of goals is something that has been worrying not only Gerardo “Tata” Martino, but also the Mexican Football Federation for a while now, as they know that if the problem persists, they won’t have many options to transcend in Qatar 2022.
That’s why Yon de Luisa and FMF are considering replacing Gerardo Martino, who is part of the problem given that he has refused to call players like Javier “Chicharito” Hernández or Carlos Vela and instead he keeps on his roster Rogelio Funes Mori and Henry Martín.
Both Miguel Herrera, who is coaching Tigres, and Nicolás Larcamón, who is coaching Club Puebla, have been linked with the Aztec squad, as Herrera has the experience of arriving on the last minute to El Tri and do a good job, and Larcamón has become one of the best coaches in Liga MX.
But according to reports from Fox Sports, Matías Almeyda is the coach that currently leads the race to be the replacement of “Tata” Martino, as he has experience in Liga MX and even admitted that he’s been in contact with people within the Mexican Football Federation.
Almeyda stated that even if he’d like to coach a national team like the Mexican, he is respectful of the process that Gerardo Martino has been doing, and he will first wait for the departure of Martino to start looking to arrive in El Tri.
If Martino ends up leaving, Almeyda could arrive at no cost, as he doesn’t have a release clause on his contract with San Jose Earthquakes, team he arrived in 2019 and is currently on his last year of contract, which ends in November.
