Mexico National Team earned direct passage to the 2022 FIFA World Cup after the 2-0 victory over El Salvador in the last match of the CONCACAF Qualifiers. The victory helped them reach 28 points to tie with Canada MNT as the best teams in the confederation.

And now that they already know the teams that they will face in the group stage of the World Cup, Gerardo “Tata” Martino will have eight months to solve the problems that El Tri suffered during the CONCACAF Qualifiers.

One of the main problems that El Tri delt with was the lack of goals, as they haven’t scored more than two goals since the group stage of the 2021 Gold Cup. Since then, they’ve just managed to score up to two goals in a few games.

Martino hasn’t found a striker that can actually score, as neither Henry Martín, Rogelio Funes Mori nor even Raúl Jiménez were able to score constantly. Jiménez, who is the starting forward, only scored three goals, all of them via penalty kick.

Martínez Dupuy was one of the best options

One of the possibilities that Gerardo Martino has to find the striker that El Tri is lacking, is to look outside Liga MX and Europe, as there’s at least three good Mexican strikers currently playing in South America, including Benjamín Galdames, Diego Abreu, and Luca Martínez Dupuy.

For now, Martínez Dupuy was the one that had more chances to be called to the senior squad, as he’s been thriving with the U-23 squad and has gained regularity with the first team of Argentine side Rosario Central.

But after last weekend’s match, where Los Rosarinos lost 2-0 against Tigre, where he played 28 minutes, Martínez Dupuy suffered a torn ACL during the workouts after the game that will prevent him from fulfilling his dream of playing with El Tri.

How much time will he miss?

According to the first reports, Martínez Dupuy will have to go through surgery before starting his recovery, which will keep him out of the pitches for at least six months. If he’s able to return before the World Cup, and regain his shape in no time, he might still have a chance to sneak in the final roster.
