Although Gerardo “Tata” Martino made him travel all the way from Italy to Mexico just to have him sitting in the bench or in the stands, Johan Vásquez doesn’t give up and keeps playing at a high level in one of the most defensive leagues in the world.
Santiago Muñoz is finally showing why he’s the striker Mexico National Team needs
Although he had a rough start with Genoa CFC when he arrived on a one-year loan, Vásquez managed to impress every single coach that the Rossoblu have had this season, as he’s stayed in the starting XI of every coach, given his outstanding performances.
Genoa is going through a weird moment, as they can’t seem to win games, although they don’t lose either, as they’ve tied their last five games and have 14 draws in 27 matches. The problem is that they’ve only managed to win a single game in the 2021-22 Serie A season.
Their most recent draw was against Inter Milan, who currently is fighting to be Serie A leaders, alongside AC Milan and SS Napoli. Genoa was able to keep a clean sheet thanks to the protagonist role that Vásquez had, as he was able to erase Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal.
Genoa currently stands second to last in Serie A, with 17 points after 27 matches. Their only victory in the season was against Cagliari Calcio, in September, and their lack of victories is what is condemning them to relegation.
Although Vásquez arrived on a one-year loan with option to buy, after becoming one of the best players in Genoa squad, they decided to acquire his economic rights for $4 million back in November, just three months after he arrived in Italy. Vásquez signed a 5-year contract, which ties him with the Rossoblu until 2026.
If Genoa is relegated, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll play in Serie B next season. He could stay in Serie A, as several teams already have showed interest in the Mexican central defender for next season. Among those teams, Fiorentina, Atalanta and Sassuolo are the most notable.
