Mexico National Team let scape the possibility of ensuring their presence in the 2022 FIFA World Cup on the first game of the CONCACAF Qualifiers match window by not being able to beat USMNT in Estadio Azteca, where the most they could do was save a scoreless draw.
The lesson that Marcelo Flores taught to the senior squad of Mexico National Team
Although the schedule for the remainder two games seems to benefit the Aztec squad, as they visit Honduras and then receive El Salvador for the last game of the Qualifiers, another bad night like the one they had in Cincinnati or Edmonton in November could jeopardize their ticket.
For now, the visit to Honduras is planned to be the game that finally gives them the ticket to Qatar 2022, as La H hasn’t won a single game in the Qualifiers and are going through one of their worst crises in recent years.
But the game of Sunday night will have a different component, as the Mexican Football Federation confirmed that Gerardo “Tata” Martino won’t be travelling with El Tri to face the game, and his place will be taken by Jorge Theiler.
Although the actual reason wasn’t revealed, FMF said that per medical recommendation, Martino didn’t make the trip with the club. But reports suggest that the Argentine coach is suffering from high blood pressure and is still recovering from the surgery he had on his right eye last year.
Nevertheless, it’s yet to be seen if he’s able to continue in front of the team once the FIFA match window is over, something that will only be known after he gets a second surgery, if he decides to do it, but if he’s not able to continue his contract, he already revealed who could replace him.
During the press conference after the scoreless draw against UMSNT, Martino confirmed that the process he’s done with the senior squad has been strengthen with the work that Jaime “Jimmy” Lozano did with the U-23 squad for the Olympics.
For the generational change that El Tri desperately needs, Martino has used the bases that Lozano left once he parted ways with El Tri, as the players that were usual on his lineup already made a difference on Thursday night, that’s why Lozano could consider arriving in El Tri if Martino can’t keep his position due to his health.
