Cruz Azul celebrates its 95th anniversary this Sunday, May 22, and is looking for a new coach. After the elimination against Tigres UANL in the quarterfinals of the Clausura 2022, Juan Reynoso was dismissed after failing to meet the club's expectations. Since then, the search for a new coach has been underway at the club's headquarters.

According to information from journalist Jorge Ramos, Diego Aguirre is the favorite to take over as coach of La Máquina and his signing will be confirmed in the next few days. However, there is also talk from different sources of information that Hugo Sánchez is the main candidate to succeed Reynoso in the position.

Even with the doubt in the air, the only thing that is certain is that Cruz Azul already had two Argentine coaches in the pipeline, whom it is now impossible to bring to La Noria. They are Matías Almeyda and Andrés Lillini, two coaches who know the league and have a track record that caught the attention of the Celestes' offices.

Matías Almeyda

The 'Pelado' was the most desired by the fans. With a triumphant past at Chivas de Guadalajara, where he won everything he played with the Rojiblancos, the former River Plate player fulfilled the requirements to take charge of La Máquina. The dream collapsed when weeks ago he confirmed his arrival at AEK Athens of the Greek Super League.

Andres Lillini

The biggest surprise in Mexican soccer in recent years. With a roster in decline, Lillini has been able to squeeze a Pumas team that has always put up a fight despite not being among the favorites. Liga MX and Concachampions League finals are the best results obtained by the Argentinean. His renewal a few days ago with the Universitarios’ was a setback for his arrival at La Noria.
