Club América won’t be able to play in Estadio Azteca.

The problems for Club América won’t stop soon, as the crisis in which they currently are don’t seem to be ending anytime soon after they couldn’t beat a CF Monterrey that has been playing way below what’s expected from them, and had to change coaches, just like Las Águilas.

Santiago Solari left Club América, but the crisis remains, as they lost against Monterrey

Without the signing of a new coach after Santiago Solari was fired, as they only promoted Fernando “Tano” Ortíz, who has just two months in the structure of Club América, it seems that their giving up hope for Clausura 2022 and will try to rebuild over the summer to face Apertura 2022 in a better shape.

But given that Estadio Azteca will be remodeled for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as is the only stadium selected to be part of the venues proposed by Mexico, United States and Canada to be older than 15 years, they will have to move to a new stadium where they can play their home games in 2023 and 2024.

According to reports, Club América had negotiated with Club Querétaro to play their local games in Estadio Corregidora but given the recent acts of violence that happened during the Liga MX game between Querétaro and Atlas, that might not happen.

Mikel Arriola already took a decision

During a press conference where he was asked what would happen to Club Querétaro and Estadio Corregidora, Liga MX president Mikel Arriola said that they’re pondering the options regarding the future of Querétaro and their participation in Liga MX.

But for Estadio Corregidora, it will stop hosting any soccer-related events until further notice, which means that if Querétaro remains in Liga MX, they won’t be able to play in their home stadium. And for Club América, they will have to look for another stadium.

Where can Las Águilas play?

According to reports, the remodeling of Estadio Azteca will begin in 2023, which gives Club América until the end of the year to find a new home stadium for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, as it will take from 18 to 24 months to remodel Estadio Azteca.

Some of the stadiums that Las Águilas could use are Estadio Azulgrana, where Club Atlante from Liga de Expansión plays; Estadio Nemesio Diez, home of Club Toluca; or even Estadio Cuauhtémoc, which even if it’s not in Mexico City, it’s close to it, as Puebla is just a few hours away from Mexico’s capital.

What will happen to Cruz Azul?

Club América is not the only team that plays in Estadio Azteca, as Cruz Azul also plays their home game in the Coloso de Santa Úrsula. But reports suggest that, if they can’t play in either Nemesio Diez or Estadio Azulgrana -their former home, when it was called Estadio Azul-, they weren’t considering playing in Querétaro, but rather in Pachuca, where they have a strong connection.
