The crisis in which Club América currently are doesn’t seem to have an end soon, as they are lagging in Clausura 2022, as they have only six points after nine rounds in what could become their worst participation in Liga MX, given that they haven’t had a worst start since the 1957-58 season.
But even now that Santiago Solari is gone and Fernando “Tano” Ortíz took over the team, at least provisionally, things haven’t changed in Las Águilas, as they couldn’t beat Monterrey on their visit to BBVA Stadium, and neither they showed any improvement.
Aside from Álvaro Fidalgo, who scored the only goal of América in the match, it seems that all the other players in the roster already feel like the season is lost, as they often looked defeated even if there were still time and didn’t try to save at least a point.
As if that wasn’t enough, “Tano” Ortíz already had his first problem with Guillermo Ochoa, as the Argentine coach is considering rotating the players on the roster to create competition and improve the level within the club, something that didn’t sit well with Ochoa, as he refuses to leave his starting role.
Ortíz knows of the talent that Ochoa has, but he also has a good relationship with Óscar Jiménez, second goalkeeper of Las Águilas, as he was relegated to the U-20 squad when Solari was still coaching Club América, which is why he would consider giving him the chance of starting a Liga MX game.
Ortíz knows that if he starts Jiménez instead of Ochoa, it will push the Mexico National Team goalkeeper to improve his performances, as he’s been involved with plenty of mistakes that have taken points from Las Águilas, although Ochoa doesn’t see it that way, as he feels his security in América is being threatened.
Ochoa is on the last year of his contract and hasn’t sit to negotiate an extension, given that Las Águilas have strict policies for contracts given to players over 30. Ochoa is looking for a two-year extension with option for a third year, something that América won’t give him.
Las Águilas are known for only giving 1-year deals to players over 30, which doesn’t compromise them to a long relationship if the player decides to retire, or his shape significantly drops, something that already is happening with Ochoa.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper has until the summer to decide if he renews with Club América, but if he doesn’t, he can start negotiating with any other club, as he’ll become a free agent at the end of the year. Reports suggest that there’s three MLS teams interested in acquiring him: Austin FC, Houston Dynamo and Charlotte FC.
