After Cruz Azul couldn’t win on their visit to Mazatlán FC for last weekend’s game with a lineup full of substitutes as they were getting ready for Tuesday’s night game, they will have to face Pumas with a roster shortened thanks to the injuries.
Carlos Rodríguez, will be out of Cruz Azul for the rest of the Clausura 2022 tournament
Carlos “Charly” García couldn’t finish the game against Mazatlán as he suffered a cracked fibula that will keep him out of the pitches for at least six weeks, three of them with an orthopedic boot. If Cruz Azul makes it to the final, García will have high chances of playing it.
Alongside Rodríguez, Cruz Azul won’t be able to have Juan Escobar, who was injured during the first leg of the semifinals after crashing with Sebastián Jurado when both Cruz Azul players were trying to clear a ball on the box.
If that wasn’t enough, José de Jesús “Chuy” Corona, who got injured during the warm-ups on the quarterfinals and hasn’t been able to recover ever since, which is why Sebastián Jurado will be the goalkeeper against Pumas.
During the last training session that La Máquina had before the second leg of the semifinal of CCL, where they are down on the score 2-1, the Paraguayan left-winger Ángel Romero trained aside from the group after presenting muscular soreness.
His absence for Tuesday night will be a tough one, as Juan Reynoso will have to rely solely on Santiago Giménez as the most proved striker for Cruz Azul, as neither Iván Morales nor Cristian Tabó have adapted to La Máquina’s needs.
So far, Giménez has scored three goals in Liga MX but has yet to score his first goal in the CONCACAF Champions League, as well as having one assistance. In contrast to the two assistances that Morales has in the season and the only goal that Tabó has scored.
The bright side for Los Cementeros is that Uriel Antuna hasn’t slowed down since he joined Cruz Azul for Clausura 2022, as he’s scored four goals wearing La Máquina colors, including two in the CCL. Antuna has also assisted 4 occasions.
