The game between Chivas and Pumas put an end to the Repechaje stage of Clausura 2022, and after three games that were decided on a penalty shootout, El Rebaño Sagrado were decided to solve the game in only 90 minutes, something they managed to do as they beat 4-1 Los Universitarios.

They started winning the game thanks to a goal of Cristian “Chicote” Calderón after only 12 minutes of the game, but Pumas didn’t take long to tie the game seven minutes later, when Diogo de Oliveira scored the equalizer.

The game was decided in favor of Chivas after Diogo had to leave the game injured due to the bad conditions of the pitch, as he was the most dangerous player for Pumas up until that point of the game. His absence on the pitch opened the door for Chivas to become more offensive.

Although the first half ended in a draw, it only took six minutes of the second half for Alexis Vega to create an outstanding player to assist Fernando “Nene” Beltrán, and after that, Chivas didn’t have opposition on the pitch.

It was his first game after the contract extension

The 24-year-old left-winger has been the best player of Chivas throughout the season, something that he knew had to keep proving in the knockout stage, especially after getting renewed and turning into the highest-paid player in El Rebaño.

He didn’t disappoint. After the great assistance he gave to put Chivas up on the scoresheet, he also scored the last goal of the game, to seal 4-1 the final score and give El Rebaño Sagrado their ticket to quarterfinals for the first time in over a year.

But Vega knew that he had to stand out on the Repechaje game, not only to show that he is worthy of the contract extension, but also because Amaury Vergara, who missed the game because he travelled to Europe, could be negotiating his departure.

Where will he play next?

Chivas are focused on playing the Clásico Tapatío in quarterfinals while Amaury Vergara met with Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven executives, who showed interest in Vega in the past few months, but also have a commercial and working relationship with El Rebaño.
