It will be very tough and almost impossible to overtake Lionel Messi as a club legend at FC Barcelona. Messi is one of the greatest footballers of all time and found lots of success at FC Barcelona, winning multiple trophies like La Liga titles, Champions League trophies, and more. He also won the Ballon d'Or award eight times throughout his career.

Lamine Yamal promises to be the next world talent that could eventually win a Ballon d'Or award. The Spanish winger impressed football fans at FC Barcelona this past season, but he was even more impressed at the EUROS this summer with Spain, which they eventually won. Yamal has been breaking records due to his age, and now he is breaking another one that even Messi couldn't break.

According to Transfermarkt, Yamal is now the youngest-ever player to hit a market value of over $100m. His value is now around $120 million at 17 years old. Messi never reached that market value at 17 as he was on the FC Barcelona B team at that and made his competitive debut in 2004.

Messi's highest market value in his career was in 2018 when he was worth around $180 million. The Argentine star was at FC Barcelona at the time, but it seemed impossible for other clubs to sign him due to his loyalty to the Catalan club. When Messi started to play more football at FC Barcelona and became one of the best players in the world, his market value grew a lot and grew to $100 million by the time he was 24.

Although Yamal's market value is huge and more than Messi's at 17, there is also content as the market has changed a lot over the years. Players are worth way more than what they were before. Yamal is expected to reach past the $150 million market value mark if he continues to shine for Spain and for FC Barcelona in the upcoming season.

Lamine Yamal, following Lionel Messi's footsteps

Yamal has not only admitted that he looks up to Messi, but now he will be wearing the same number the Argentine once wore. FC Barcelona announced that Yamal would be wearing the number 19 next season, a number Messi used to wear in his early days at Barca.
