Kobbie Mainoo made a name for himself this past season with Manchester United as he was decisive in making sure to earn a starting spot in the team ahead of Casemiro and other players. This led to him earning a call-up to the England national team and a call-up to the EUROS. The England squad is stacked with world-class players who play for some of the biggest clubs in the world. This didn't matter to Mainoo as he made history in the competition this summer, which put him next to names like Wayne Rooney. Mainoo started in the England vs Slovenia match in the Round of 16 of the EUROS. At 19 years and 72 days old, only Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen have started a knockout stage game for England at a younger age than Kobbie Mainoo. Michael Owen was 18 years and 198 days old when he played against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup knockouts. Rooney was 18 years and 244 days old when he played a knockout game against Portugal in the 2004 EUROS.
Mainoo played about four minutes in the match against Serbia, which was England's first match of EURO 2024 this summer. He was benched completely in the 1-1 draw against Denmark. In the 0-0 draw against Slovenia, Mainoo came on in the second half to replace Conor Gallagher. The manager of the England national team, Gareth Southgate, was very impressed with Mainoo and started him in the match against Slovakia in the Round of 16.
In the match against Slovakia, he played a total of 84 minutes in the game. He has a 96% pass accuracy in the game and created one chance, despite playing as a holding midfielder next to Declan Rice. He had a shot off target that went close to the next and a shot that was blocked, showing his attacking attributes as well.
England will be taking on Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the EUROS. If they beat Switzerland, they will play the Netherlands or Turkiye in the semifinal. Mainoo may be given another chance to start the game for England.
