UEFA strongly condemned the Russian military invasion in Ukraine and assured that it is "treating the situation with the utmost seriousness and urgency" and will take decisions to be announced this Friday on the venue of the Champions League final, which is scheduled for May 28 in St. Petersburg.
How long has it been since Christian Pulisic scored in the UEFA Champions League?
In a statement, the body declared that it "shares the significant concern of the international community about the developing security situation in Europe and strongly condemns the ongoing Russian military invasion in Ukraine."
"As the governing body of European soccer, UEFA works tirelessly to develop and promote soccer in accordance with the common values of Europe, such as peace and respect for human rights, all present in the spirit of the Olympic Charter. We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian soccer community and stand ready to reach out to the people of Ukraine," they added.
After convening an extraordinary meeting of its Executive Committee for Friday, UEFA insisted that it is "treating this situation with the utmost seriousness and urgency" and that its Executive "will take decisions on the matter and will announce them this Friday".
In the last two editions of the Champions League, the European governing body has already had to change the venues of knockout matches and the final because of the pandemic.
In the 2019-20 season, in which the title was to be defined in Istanbul, the quarter-final matches were played in Portugal and the final was played in Da Luz, with Bayern Munich beating PSG.
In the 2020-21 campaign, in which, once again, the final was to be played in the Turkish city, the title was played between Chelsea, who were champions, and Manchester City, at the Do Dragao stadium in Porto.
Also because of the pandemic, UEFA had to modify the program and scenarios of the 2019-20 Europa League. The round of 16 matches, the quarterfinals, the semifinals, and the final, in which Sevilla beat Inter Milan in Cologne, were played in Germany. For days now, names of possible alternatives to the St. Petersburg stadium for the next Champions League final have begun to emerge, however, nothing is confirmed.
