Due to the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, there is a new venue for the final of the UEFA Champions League, so the outcome of this tournament will no longer be held in St. Petersburg as planned.
The change of venue was announced by the Union of European Football Associations after the escalation of the war conflict.
The new venue for the final of the tournament will be the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, and the match will be played, as originally scheduled, on Saturday, May 28 at 21:00 CET.
In the statement released by the body through its social networks, UEFA thanks the President of France, Emanuel Macron for hosting the most prestigious European club tournament in the face of this unprecedented crisis.
In the announcement UEFA also pledged to continue to monitor the situation closely and to continue to hold extraordinary meetings on a regular and ongoing basis as necessary, to reassess the legal and factual situation as it evolves, and to take further decisions as necessary.
In the same statement, the body announced that Russian and Ukrainian clubs and national teams competing in UEFA competitions will be required to play their home matches at neutral venues until further notice.
With this announcement, the tension to which UEFA and the soccer organizations of the aforementioned European countries had reached yesterday, which had even threatened not to participate in these re-qualification matches, is somewhat relieved.
The consequences of the war between Russia and Ukraine have already been felt around the world and the change of venue for the UEFA Champions Cup final is just one effect of many that have been seen since yesterday.
Another of the consequences has been the withdrawal of Russian sponsors from the uniforms of some soccer teams, such as Schalke 04, with the Russian gas company Gazprom, and the possible withdrawal of the Russian airline Aeroflot from Manchester United's sponsorship.
Therefore, the change of venue for the UEFA Champions League final is an announcement that comes as no surprise and was even expected, despite the fact that only yesterday morning the body had been firm in its decision to keep the final in St. Petersburg.
Will this be the latest consequence of war in the world of soccer? Only time will tell.
