Copa America will start next week, and the Argentina national team has one more friendly match to play in preparation for the tournament. Argentina has just defeated Ecuador 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Angel Di Maria. The Copa America 2024 will be his last tournament with the Argentina national team, but he is breaking records within the national team that put along other great Argentine players like Lionel Messi and Diego Armando Maradona. The record Di Maria is holding is that he scored for Argentina for 14 years, which is the third largest period of time scoring goals for Argentina. Di Maria scored his first goal for Argentina in May 2010 in a 5-0 win against Canada. The official time frame he has been scoring for Argentina is 14 years and 13 days this past Sunday. Messi has 17 years scoring goals for Argentina, from 2006 to October 2023, while Maradona’s last 15 years scoring for Argentina, from 1979 to 1994.

With the goal against Ecuador, Di Maria also became the 7th top goal scorer of the Argentina national team as he scored his 30th in the friendly this past weekend. Gonzalo Higuain is above him with 31 goals, and Diego Armando Maradona has 32 goals. Hernan Crespo has 35 goals, Sergio Aguero has 42 goals, Gabriel Batistuta has 54 goals, and Lionel Messi has 106 goals.

He has also been successful under the tenure of Lionel Scaloni since he became the head coach of Argentina in 2018. He scored 11 goals under Scaloni and has been the third top goal-scorer in Argentina since 2018. Lautaro Martinez scored 22 goals under Scaloni, while Messi scored 41 goals.

Argentina will be in Group A and will play in the opener of Copa America 2024. Argentina will play against Canada on June 20th at the Mercedez-Benz Stadium. Their second match in the group stage will be against Chile on June 25th at MetLife Stadium. The final game in the group for the World Champions will be against Peru on June 29th at the Hard Rock Stadium. The final list of the Argentina squad is set to be released after the friendly match against Guatemala this Friday.
