Giovanni Reyna, a 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund player, was selected for the last FIFA date of the year when three matches will be played in the CONCACAF region. The Stars and Stripes will start the matches against the Mexican national team and will visit the Azteca stadium.
The match will be played on March 24 and will feature these two nations that are usually the most important in the CONCACAF region. Both teams are tied with 21 points in the standings, but the USMNT are ahead on goal difference. Canada, on the other hand, leads both Mexico and Gregg Berhalter's squad with 25 points.
With major absences on the USMNT side, such as Juventus' Weston McKennie, RB Salzburg's Brenden Aaronson, and FC Barcelona's Sergiño Dest, other players will have to lead the Stars and Stripes, and Gio Reyna will be one of them.
Gio Reyna, who has had a difficult season marked by injuries, was able to arrive fit for the CONCACAF qualifiers, having returned to the field a week earlier with the German team.
Gregg Berhalter knows of the young player's abilities and is likely to lead the attack alongside Christian Pulisic for the match against Gerardo Martino's squad.
After the RB Salzburg youngster dropped out of the squad at the last minute, Gio Reyna becomes the main player to take over the position of the Austrian-based striker.
"We know they are one of the strongest teams and it will not be an easy game, but scoring in this game would be special, as it was special, it was the first time I did it, but right now I am not really thinking that I need to score because we are playing against Mexico, I will just do my game to be able to score, assist, try to get anything to help the team as much as possible, and if I manage to score it will be great, if I assist also, but if we win it will also be great," Gio Reyna said during the week.
Reyna also ruled out Mexico City's altitude as an issue of concern because it will affect both teams equally.
