Alexi Lalas, historic defender of the Stars and Stripes heated the USMNT vs. Mexican National Team with strong statements and blasts Mexico.
With his statements, Lalas made fans of the Mexican national soccer team shudder, as what he said hit the current squad led by Gerardo Martino.
The Stars and Stripes defender said that this was the weakest Mexican national team he had seen and that this was the opportunity for the Stars and Stripes to win at the Azteca Stadium.
"This is the weakest Mexican National Team I have ever seen in my life, this is the great opportunity to beat them at the Azteca Stadium. This Mexico team reminds me of the 2017 U.S. team, where a generation of players was coming to an end."
In addition, the USMNT international spoke about the issue of age, which for him, will be a determining factor in El Tri's performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
"If Mexico qualifies, coach Gerardo Martino will have to think about making big changes for the World Cup in Qatar, because the World Cup is for young people," said the defender.
Lalas' statements were not only about today's match or the generational change in the Mexican national soccer team, but he also talked about how and in what aspect MLS is surpassing Liga MX.
"It's a combination of many things. The U.S. competition has grown very fast, on and off the field. Also, the development of U.S. players is much better and, in addition, MLS has become a more direct bridge to Europe for young players."
What Alexi Lalas mentions regarding the export of players is a fact, since while Gregg Berhalter called up 16 players who play in different leagues in Europe for the last FIFA matchday on the road to Qatar, Gerardo Martino called up 10 players who play in Europe.
This shows that Mexico is lagging in terms of exporting players to European leagues, and Lalas knows it and that is why he mentioned it in his comments.
And while these comments may make Mexican national team fans uncomfortable or angry, this is an issue that the Mexican Soccer Federation should review.
As an international with the USMNT, Lalas has played 93 games, scoring 10 goals in competitions such as the World Cup Qualifiers, the World Cup, Copa América, and Gold Cup.
He also played for clubs such as Calcio Padova, New England Revolution, Emelec, MetroStars, Kansas City Wizards, and LA Galaxy.
